Abia Warriors Football Club started their 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season on a bright note with a narrow 1-0 victory over Kano Pillars in Umuahia.
The Umu Chineke side grabbed the decisive goal in the 35th minute when Paul Samson converted from close range after his corner delivery caused confusion in the visitors’ box. The Cross River-born attacker’s effort was enough to give the Warriors their first win of the season.
The victory was a welcome relief for the home side, erasing the disappointment of last season’s opening-day defeat to eventual champions, Remo Stars, while also delighting their home supporters.
Abia Warriors featured six new signings in their starting XI, including former Heartland striker Suraj Lawal, who led the attack. Lawal nearly gave the hosts an early lead in the 21st minute but wasted the chance when one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
The second half turned into an end-to-end contest, with substitute Chindi Merpring coming close to doubling the advantage. The former Edel FC forward was denied twice by the woodwork in the 63rd and 83rd minutes. He also came agonizingly close in another moment when he dispossessed Kano Pillars goalkeeper Abuchi Okeke, only to see the ball roll wide of goal.
Despite a late fightback from Kano Pillars, the Warriors held firm to secure all three points and kick off their campaign on a winning note.
Up next, Abia Warriors will face Nasarawa United away in Lafia on Matchday 2.
