Abia Warriors Defeat KMK Academy as Preseason Continues Ahead of CAF Confederation Cup Debut

Posted : 23 July 2025

Abia Warriors have intensified their build-up to their historic first appearance in the CAF Confederation Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over Nationwide League side KMK Academy in a preseason friendly held at the Uyo Township Stadium.

Currently undergoing an intensive preseason programme in Uyo, the Umuahia-based club used the friendly to test new players and refine tactical approaches in preparation for their continental debut. Both teams delivered solid performances, but a solitary goal was enough to give the Warriors a slim win.

Coach Imama Amapakabo, who recently resumed duties amid speculation linking him to Kano Pillars, was on the sidelines guiding the team. His focus remains on building a cohesive and competitive squad for their maiden CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

Team management confirmed that more friendly matches are scheduled in the coming days as preparations move into a critical phase. These games are intended to evaluate the team’s readiness and integrate new signings effectively.

In a significant development, Coach Amapakabo has dismissed rumours of a possible switch to Kano Pillars. He was seen leading the training sessions in Uyo, reinforcing his commitment to the Warriors as they gear up for the continental challenge.

Adding to the optimism within the camp, the squad has welcomed new players, including Imo Obot and Alalibo Somiari from neighbouring Enyimba FC. These additions are part of strategic efforts to strengthen the squad before the start of their CAF Confederation Cup journey.

Reports had earlier suggested that talks between Amapakabo and Kano Pillars were at an advanced stage. However, his continued presence has helped settle nerves among fans who feared his departure could derail the team’s preparations.

Abia Warriors will continue their preseason programme this week in Uyo, with more friendlies planned to fine-tune the squad ahead of their CAF debut.
