Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia secured their second consecutive home victory in the ongoing 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, defeating Katsina United 1-0 at the Umuahia Township Stadium in Matchday 4 action.
Somiari Alalibo emerged as the hero for the home side, scoring the decisive second-half goal that handed Katsina United their second defeat of the season.
Katsina United, featuring three former Abia Warriors players—Philip Ogwuche, Richard Christopher, and goalkeeper Joshua Enaholo—gave the home team a tough challenge in the first half. Enaholo’s brilliant saves ensured the scoreline remained close.
Early on, Umu Chineke came close to scoring in the fifth minute when Yakub Hammed’s free-kick was expertly parried by Enaholo. Seven minutes later, Chindi Merpring missed a golden chance as his hurried shot went wide. Emeka Obioma, starting his first match of the season, tested his former teammate Enaholo with free-kicks in the 20th and 40th minutes, but the Katsina goalkeeper remained solid.
The breakthrough came six minutes into the second half. Samuel Ogunjimi replaced Casmir Azubuike, as the Warriors pushed for a goal. Taheer Abubakar’s corner found Somiari Alalibo inside the box, and the former Enyimba captain controlled the ball and struck it past Enaholo to make it 1-0.
Katsina United responded with multiple substitutions in a bid to equalize, but it was Abia Warriors who nearly extended their lead. Emeka Obioma set up Merpring inside the box, but the striker’s hesitation allowed defenders to block his attempt. Moments later, Odah Okiemute rushed off his line to deny a one-on-one opportunity, maintaining the Warriors’ advantage. In stoppage time, second-half substitute Israel Joseph nearly doubled the lead, but his curling effort went just wide.
Abia Warriors now turn their attention to continental competition, as they prepare to face Djoliba AC of Mali in a CAF Confederation Cup clash at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium (The Nest of Champions) in Uyo on Sunday, September 21, 2025.
