2025/2026 NPFL Matchday 8 Review: Abia Warriors Down El-Kanemi Warriors

Posted : 13 October 2025

Casmir Azubike scored twice as Abia Warriors defeated El-Kanemi Warriors 2–0, securing all three points.

Two first-half goals from Abia Warriors youngster Casmir Azubike secured a vital win for the hosts over visiting El-Kanemi Warriors in a Matchday 8 encounter of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

From the first whistle, the hosts made their intentions clear, pressing their opponents aggressively.

Abia Warriors’ coach, Imama Amapakabo, made only one change to the side that lost in Enugu, with Sunday Megwo returning to the starting lineup after missing the games against Kwara United in Ilorin and Rangers in Enugu. Shedrack Asiegbu made way for him.

Within three minutes, dazzling winger Suraj Lawal entered the opponents’ box, but his shot was blocked. Five minutes later, Emeka Obioma’s attempt was parried to safety.

The veteran striker was denied again in the 13th minute by El-Kanemi Warriors’ goalkeeper Hakeem Otuyiga, who parried another shot. Hakeem was again called into action in the 20th minute, neutralizing the danger from Suraj’s cross.

However, he was helpless four minutes later as the home side took the lead. The Umuahia Warlords orchestrated a string of passes, culminating in a simple backheel from Sunday Megwo to Casmir Azubike, who scored the opener.

Azubike completed his brace three minutes later when Jubrin Faiz’s delivery into El-Kanemi’s box caused a mix-up between Otuyiga and centre-back Habila David, allowing Azubike to toe the ball into an empty net.

Suraj Lawal was unlucky as his 36th-minute goal was ruled out for offside, following another enterprising play from Umu Chineke.

In the second half, the visitors sought a goal as they began to find their rhythm, but Abia Warriors could have extended their lead. Their penalty appeal in the 51st minute was waved away by Rivers State-based referee Uchenna Enyadike. Sunday Megwo appeared to be fouled in the box by Otuyiga, but the referee awarded a free-kick instead, much to the disappointment of the home fans and bench.

Despite numerous substitutions from both sides, Abia Warriors held on to secure all three points, maintaining their second position on the 20-team NPFL table.

Up next, Abia Warriors will face Shooting Stars Sports Club in Ibadan.
