Suraj Lawal scored an injury-time goal to secure a 1-1 draw for Abia Warriors against Rivers United in a pulsating Matchday 16 encounter of the ongoing Nigeria Premier Football League at the Umuahia Township Stadium.
The Warriors could have easily won the game, but profligacy in front of goal proved costly.
The match was highly tactical, with the Warriors taking the game to the visitors from the first whistle. However, their frontline failed to convert several promising opportunities.
In the second half, the Warriors raised the tempo, pinning Rivers United to their own half, while the visitors relied mostly on counterattacks that the Warriors’ defense managed well.
The home side appeared to have taken the lead in the 55th minute when Rivers United goalkeeper Ani Ozoemena spilled a shot, and Suraj Lawal tapped in the rebound. However, the First Assistant Referee raised the flag for offside, angering the home bench and fans.
Despite further chances for the Warriors, Rivers United went ahead against the run of play. Ubong Friday’s delivery from a counterattack bypassed the Warriors’ defense, allowing substitute Maclyn Biokpo Jenewari to score in the 86th minute.
Rivers United’s bench believed they had secured all three points—only for Suraj Lawal to rise highest and head home Jubrin Faiz’s delivery for the equalizer four minutes into stoppage time, salvaging a point for the home team.
