Sunshine Stars FC delivered an entertaining and commanding performance but were left frustrated as they were held to a 1–1 draw by visiting Abia Comets in a closely contested encounter at the Akure Township Stadium.
From the opening whistle, the Owena Waves controlled proceedings, dictating the tempo and creating several clear-cut chances, though they managed only a single goal. Sunshine Stars’ fluid passing, high-intensity pressing, and attacking intent kept Abia Comets largely on the back foot, yet the scoreline did not fully reflect their dominance.
Despite their superiority, the cruel nature of football prevented the home side from claiming maximum points in a match many observers expected them to win comfortably.
Reacting to the result, die-hard Sunshine Stars supporter Agunbiade Pelumi praised the team’s overall display while lamenting the inability to secure all three points.
“Sunshine Stars were excellent today, but hard luck denied the team the three points,” he said. “The players and technical crew showed great commitment and determination. Football can be unpredictable at times.”
Pelumi urged the club’s management to continue supporting the players and technical staff, emphasizing that consistency and backing will be vital as the season progresses. He also suggested that better officiating in future games could help Sunshine Stars convert strong performances into victories.
“Everyone at the stadium appreciated the display, but as passionate fans, we wanted all three points,” he added.
Although the result may feel like two points dropped, Sunshine Stars’ performance provided plenty of positives and reinforced the belief that the team is on the right track. With such spirited displays, the Owena Waves will be hopeful of translating their strong performances into crucial wins as the season unfolds.
