Abia Angels thrown into turmoil as coaching shake-up rocks Super 6 preparations

Posted : 05 June 2026

Abia Angels FC have been plunged into uncertainty on the eve of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super 6 tournament following the suspension of Head Coach Mario Eshalomi.

The development comes as a major surprise, given Eshalomi's role in steering the team through a successful regular season campaign that secured qualification for the season-ending championship playoffs.

Reports indicate that the coach was directed to step aside by the club's Commissioner in the presence of players, members of the technical crew, and other club officials. The decision has generated intense debate within football circles, with many questioning the rationale behind such a move at a crucial stage of the season.

The timing of the suspension has particularly raised concerns among supporters and stakeholders, who fear it could destabilize the team's preparations and affect morale ahead of their opening fixtures against some of the country's strongest sides.

Abia Angels have been one of the standout teams in the NWFL this season under the leadership of Chairman Johnson Nwosu, earning widespread praise for their consistency and determination. However, the latest off-field controversy now threatens to overshadow the club's achievements and ambitions in Port Harcourt.

In response to the situation, several stakeholders in women's football have appealed to Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, to intervene and ensure stability within the team. They argue that Eshalomi should be allowed to complete the assignment he started, stressing that continuity could prove vital to the club's chances of success in the Super 6.

Supporters also maintain that resolving the matter swiftly would help restore confidence within the squad and enable the players to focus fully on competing for honours.

With the NWFL Super 6 set to commence, attention has shifted from on-field expectations to the unfolding leadership crisis, as fans await further developments and hope for a resolution that safeguards the interests of the club and the reputation of sports in Abia State.

The coming days will test the resilience of the squad as they navigate this unexpected managerial transition during the tournament. Stakeholders remain hopeful that a swift administrative resolution will mitigate further distractions and allow the athletes to deliver a performance worthy of their hard-earned championship spot.
