It was the mother of all upsets yesterday as Nigeria National League (NNL) side Abakaliki FC dumped four-time winners Enyimba International FC out of the 2025 President Federation Cup with a 2-0 win.
It was an upset nobody saw coming, as the People's Elephants' unstable 2024/2025 season reached its peak but also its all-time low when they succumbed to lower-league Abakaliki FC 2-0 in a President Federation Cup round-of-16 clash.
It was evident that the most successful clubside in Nigeria struggled throughout the match with no balance in the team.
Currently sitting 9th in the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) standings, this could be the worst season for the nine-time league winners, Enyimba International, who have now lost ground to a team founded just five months ago from Ebonyi State.
The Ebonyi boys opened the scoring in the 46th minute and sealed their victory in the 66th, to the dismay of the former champions, who struggled in vain to get back into the game.
The win took Abakaliki FC to their first President Federation Cup quarterfinal.
The NNL side will now face Nasarawa United, who defeated Bayelsa United in another round-of-16 match via 5-4 penalties.
All the quarterfinal pairings:
Abakaliki FC vs Nasarawa United
Wikki Tourists vs Ikorodu City
Akwa United vs Kwara United
Plateau United vs Rangers International
