7th Ifeanyi Ekwueme Tico/Select Pre-Season Tournament Kicks Off

The organisers of the 7th edition of the Ifeanyi Ekwueme Tico/Select Pre-Season Tournament have confirmed that the competition is scheduled to kick off on August 2 and will run through August 9.

 

The highly anticipated event will feature Nigeria's elite clubs in a thrilling group-stage contest, where the top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals and final.

 

Stanley Eguma, head coach of Enyimba FC, was officially unveiled, signalling the club's committed participation in the competition. Eguma emphasized the tournament's importance, noting that it offers a vital opportunity to fine-tune tactics, build squad cohesion, and assess readiness for the upcoming season.

 

“This tournament will help my team as we prepare for the new season. We’re looking to play important games so we can assess the squad and identify key areas to improve ahead of the campaign,” Eguma said.

 

He also paid tribute to Ifeanyi Ekwueme, the tournament's founder and sole sponsor, for sustaining the initiative over the years.

 

“My brother, Ifeanyi Ekwueme, must be encouraged in what he is doing with his Tico/Select Pre-Season Tournament for our league teams. He has done this solely for seven years due to his passion for developing the game,” Eguma added.

 

Ekwueme’s unwavering commitment, visionary leadership, and dedication to grassroots football development have earned him widespread recognition across the Nigerian football community.

 

The tournament promises to be an exciting showcase of football talent, featuring top-tier Nigerian clubs, including Enyimba FC.

 

With Eguma’s tactical oversight and Ekwueme’s organizational expertise, the event is expected to be professionally run, emotionally resonant, and strategically timed — making it a vital curtain-raiser ahead of the 2025/26 NPFL season, which kicks off on August 22.
