37 Teams Register for Ezza Ezekuna Unity Cup in Ebonyi

Posted : 30 December 2025

A total of 37 community football teams from Ezza, Ebonyi, have registered for the “Ezza Ezekuna Unity Cup,” a tournament designed to nurture local football talent. The competition, which commenced on December 27, is scheduled to conclude on January 7.

Mr. Darlington Uguta, the organiser and sponsor of the tournament, explained during the opening ceremony in Onueke, Ezza South Local Government Area, that the event seeks to unearth grassroots football talent while engaging youths in productive activities. Uguta emphasized that the tournament aligns with federal and state youth empowerment initiatives.

“It will serve as a scouting platform to identify promising athletes while steering youths away from social vices,” Uguta said. “This Unity Cup aims to foster peace, develop future stars, and elevate local players from the streets by improving their skills, mindset, and approach to the game.”

Mr. Ifeanyi Nworie, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, highlighted that the competition features players in the under-13 and under-22 categories. “We have 37 teams representing the 36 communities of Ezza land. The tournament is designed to identify talents that can be nurtured to international standards and foster peace among our people. Outstanding players and teams will be rewarded handsomely,” he added.

Mrs. Euphemia Nwali, Executive Chairman of Ezza South Local Government Area, described the initiative as a “welcome development” for engaging youths meaningfully and curbing restiveness. She encouraged young players to showcase their abilities and pledged the council’s support for youth development.

The tournament was officially declared open by the Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Rev. Fr. Peter Chukwu. The opening match between Isinkwo and Abomege football clubs ended in a thrilling 3–3 draw. Other participating teams include Super Star, Oriuzor, Ezza-Ntezi, Ezza-Oka, Ogaja-Ezagu, Oshegbe, and Glory.
