₦2m Prize Headlines Maiden AFH Pre-Season Tournament

Posted : 15 October 2026

Grassrunners JNR and Eko United will set the ball rolling at the maiden African Football Holding (AFH) Pre-Season Tournament as 10 teams begin their campaign at FC Ebedei Stadium, Apele, Sagamu, on Thursday.

The 10-day competition, themed “Good Football, Great Futures,” will run from October 15 to 24, providing clubs in the Nigeria National League (NNL) and Nationwide League One (NLO) an opportunity to assess their squads ahead of the new season.

Other participating teams are Sunshine Stars, FC Ebedei, Dokkal Khairu, Crown FC, Stormers SC, Ebedei Sports College, Grassrunners FC and Ikorodu City FA.

FC Ebedei will later face Sunshine Stars to complete the opening day’s Group A fixtures in what promises to be an exciting contest.

Lead of the AFH Pre-Season Tournament Organising Committee, Tunde Shamsudeen, said the competition was designed to provide participating teams with adequate playing time to test their players and tactical approaches.

“After more than a month of planning, the kickoff is a few hours away,” Shamsudeen said.

He explained that each team would play four matches during the group phase, accumulating 360 minutes of football to fine-tune their preparations before the final.

Shamsudeen added that the tournament would offer financial incentives, with the eventual champions receiving ₦2 million, while the runners-up would earn ₦1 million.

The winners will also receive a gold trophy, with medals presented to both finalists.

He further disclosed that European scouts would attend the tournament to identify outstanding players for potential opportunities abroad.

Meanwhile, the Main Organising Committee has adopted a group-stage format to determine the finalists.

Under the arrangement, the 10 teams will compete in two groups, with each side playing four matches according to the approved fixtures.

The team that finishes top of each group will advance to the final, scheduled for Saturday, October 24, to determine the inaugural champions.

Beyond the title and prize money, the tournament is expected to provide participating clubs with valuable match experience and a platform for emerging talents to attract wider attention ahead of the 2026/2027 campaign.
