₦20m Prize Up for Grabs as 100 Teams Battle in 1X Cup 2026

The race for the ₦20 million grand prize will begin on Thursday, July 23, as no fewer than 100 grassroots football teams compete in the 2026 edition of the 1X Cup at the Inspire Sports Centre, Kappa, Oshodi, Lagos.

The community-based competition, regarded as one of Nigeria's biggest grassroots football tournaments, has attracted teams from the five divisions of the Lagos State Football Association—Epe, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Ikorodu, and Badagry.

Beyond the prize money, the tournament is designed to provide a platform for emerging talents to showcase their abilities before local and international scouts, with opportunities for European trials and professional contracts.

The opening day will feature four matches, setting the stage for weeks of competition among some of the state's finest grassroots clubs.

Technical Director of the tournament, Engr. Waidi Akanni, said organisers were fully prepared for the championship and urged participating teams to uphold discipline and fair play throughout the event.

Akanni warned that the Local Organising Committee (LOC) would not tolerate any form of misconduct or unprofessional behaviour during the competition.

The qualification phase will run from July 23 to Sept. 4, after which successful teams will progress to the group stage. The group stage draw is scheduled for Sept. 11, with matches taking place between Sept. 15 and Oct. 8.

The knockout rounds will be played from Oct. 15 to Oct. 27, while the final is slated for Oct. 31 to conclude the 2026 edition of the tournament.

With a substantial cash prize and opportunities for players to earn professional contracts, the 2026 1X Cup is expected to provide another major platform for discovering grassroots talent while promoting community football development across Lagos State.
