Brazil secured its place after coming from behind to beat Japan 2-1. The five-time world champions will now face Norway, which edged Ivory Coast 2-1 in another closely contested match. The winner will move into the quarter-finals with a potential meeting against either Mexico or England.
Host nation Mexico continued its impressive campaign with a victory over Ecuador to maintain its perfect record in the tournament. El Tri will now welcome England to the legendary Estadio Azteca in one of the standout fixtures of the Round of 16. England booked its place after recovering to defeat DR Congo 2-1.
World champions Argentina also survived a major scare. Lionel Messi and his teammates needed extra time before defeating tournament surprise package Cape Verde 3-2 in a thrilling contest. Argentina will now meet Egypt, which overcame Australia on penalties after a 1-1 draw following 120 minutes.
Portugal and Spain will renew their long-standing rivalry after both advanced from the previous round. Portugal defeated Croatia 2-1 after extra time, while Spain produced one of the most convincing performances of the knockout stage with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Austria.
France continued its strong run with a dominant 3-0 win over Sweden. Les Bleus will now face Paraguay, which produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament by eliminating Germany in a penalty shootout.
Elsewhere, Morocco advanced by defeating the Netherlands on penalties and will take on Canada, which edged South Africa 1-0. Belgium claimed a dramatic 3-2 victory over Senegal to earn a meeting with the United States, which comfortably defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0.
Switzerland also progressed with a 2-0 victory over Algeria and will now face Colombia, which completed the Round of 16 lineup with a narrow 1-0 win over Ghana.
The Round of 16 begins on July 4 with Canada facing Morocco in Houston, before France meets Paraguay in Philadelphia. The remaining matches will be played across the United States, Mexico and Canada, with places in the quarter-finals at stake.
