2026 Unity Cup: Chelle demands more hardwork from Super Eagles

Despite guiding Nigeria to a convincing victory over Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle says his team is still far from the level he expects.

The Super Eagles defeated the Warriors 2-0 in London on Tuesday night, with Femi Azeez scoring both goals to send Nigeria into the final of the competition.

However, Chelle made it clear after the match that the result alone was not enough to satisfy him, insisting that his players must continue to improve as the team prepares for bigger challenges ahead.

According to the Malian tactician, the encounter served mainly as part of the rebuilding process for the national team and an opportunity for players to better understand his tactical demands.

“This is only a friendly game. This is not the World Cup qualifier. They need to work hard,” Chelle stated during his post-match interview.

“They need to try to understand what I want, what the technical staff want, and the high level is difficult.”

Chelle also pointed out areas where the team struggled, particularly in possession, noting that mistakes made against Zimbabwe must be corrected quickly.

“So you see, we made some mistakes with the ball. For sure, tomorrow we work out,” he added.

Nigeria will now face Jamaica in the Unity Cup final after the Reggae Boyz defeated India in the other semi-final, with Chelle expected to continue assessing his squad as he shapes the Super Eagles ahead of future competitive fixtures.

The emphasis on continuous improvement underscores the technical crew's determination to establish a highly disciplined and tactically sound national team. As the players gear up for the final showdown against Jamaica, addressing these performance gaps will be crucial for sustainable success. This tournament remains a vital testing ground for building a formidable squad capable of dominating upcoming international engagements.
