2026 President Federation Cup (Women): FC Robo Queens sends shock waves with elimination of 10-times champions Rivers Angels

Posted : 19 June 2026

FC Robo Queens produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 President Federation Cup after stunning defending champions Rivers Angels 1-0 in a fiercely contested quarter-final clash at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.

The Lagos-based side gained sweet revenge for their recent Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super Six defeat and, in the process, ended Rivers Angels' hopes of defending the prestigious trophy.

Coming into the encounter, Rivers Angels carried the weight of history as ten-time Federation Cup champions and reigning holders. The Port Harcourt side had also edged FC Robo Queens 3-2 during the recently concluded NWFL Super Six, making them favourites to progress.

However, FC Robo Queens had other plans.

The match began cautiously, with both teams showing respect for each other's quality. Rivers Angels threatened first in the 11th minute when Abasiofon Uwah met a corner kick from Sandra John, but her header sailed wide.

Despite enjoying periods of possession, Rivers Angels found it difficult to break down a disciplined FC Robo Queens defence that remained compact and organised throughout the contest.

The breakthrough arrived before halftime when Opeyemi Ajakaye capitalised on an opportunity to put FC Robo Queens ahead. The goal proved decisive and shifted momentum firmly in favour of the Lagos side.

Holding a slender advantage, FC Robo Queens returned for the second half determined to protect their lead, while Rivers Angels intensified efforts to rescue the contest.

In search of a response, Rivers Angels head coach made a triple substitution at the break, introducing Sharon Onwere, Rashidat Salau, and Taiwo Ajibade for Chisom Nwachukwu, Peace Effiong, and Patience Otubo.

The changes injected urgency into the champions' attack, but FC Robo Queens remained resolute, frustrating every attempt to find an equaliser.

Sharon Onwere's yellow card in the 66th minute reflected the increasing pressure and desperation within the Rivers Angels ranks as time continued to slip away.

Further substitutions followed in the 72nd minute, with Ramotalahi Kareem and Victoria Eyakandue replacing Grace Saliu and Polinus Ifeoma, but the defending champions could not unlock the stubborn FC Robo Queens backline.

After three minutes of added time, the final whistle confirmed a memorable victory for the Lagos Landladies and a painful exit for one of Nigeria's most successful women's football clubs.

Full Time: Rivers Angels 0-1 FC Robo Queens

The result not only ended Rivers Angels' title defence but also highlighted FC Robo Queens' growing credentials as genuine contenders for the Federation Cup crown.

Having overcome one of the biggest names in Nigerian women's football, FC Robo Queens have demonstrated resilience, tactical maturity, and the winning mentality required for knockout football.

Their reward is a semi-final showdown against Heartland Queens, who also advanced after overcoming Ibom Angels on penalties.

With confidence soaring and momentum firmly on their side, FC Robo Queens will now set their sights on another major hurdle as they continue their remarkable quest for Federation Cup glory.

The historic victory cements the Lagos Landladies' status as a formidable force capable of taking down the country's elite teams. By maintaining defensive discipline and capitalizing on critical moments, the squad proved that they have the tactical depth required to go all the way. Football enthusiasts can expect an explosive semi-final battle as the race for the prestigious crown intensifies.
