2026 President Federation Cup: Super-sub Ada fires Nasarawa United into semi-finals

Posted : 12 June 2026

Nasarawa United booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 President Federation Cup after substitute Ada Umar delivered a decisive late winner in a dramatic 2-1 victory over fierce North-Central rivals Plateau United at the Bwari Sports Complex, Abuja.

The thrilling quarter-final encounter appeared destined for extra time after Plateau United cancelled out Nasarawa's first-half lead, but Umar once again proved his worth from the bench, scoring the match-winning goal to send the Solid Miners into the last four of Nigeria's oldest football competition.

Backed by a large contingent of supporters and top government officials, including Nasarawa State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General Isaac Danladi, the Solid Miners started brightly and dominated much of the opening period.

Their pressure paid off just before the break when wing-back Abubakar Abdullahi rose highest to meet a long throw from John Victor, powering a header beyond the Plateau United goalkeeper in the 44th minute.

With the lead intact heading into the closing stages, Nasarawa United looked on course for victory until Plateau United struck back late in the contest.

Aboh Daniel capitalised on a well-worked move in the 85th minute, finishing calmly to restore parity and give the Peace Boys renewed hope.

However, the response from Nasarawa United was immediate and decisive.

Only minutes after Plateau's equaliser, Umar Ada punished a defensive lapse inside the opposition half. The forward showed composure and determination as he raced clear, evaded a defender, and calmly slotted past goalkeeper Amah John to restore Nasarawa's advantage.

The goal was Umar's second in consecutive Federation Cup matches following his strike against Rivers United in the Round of 16, further underlining his growing importance to the team.

Despite late pressure from Plateau United, the Solid Miners held firm through stoppage time to secure a memorable victory and continue their impressive cup run.

The win sets up an intriguing semi-final clash against Ikorodu City FC, who edged Barau FC 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in their quarter-final encounter in Awka.

Reacting after the match, Nasarawa United head coach Mangut Mbwas praised his players' determination and fighting spirit.

"To God be the glory for today's result. To concede late and still find a winner shows character, especially against a strong opposition. Ada Umar made a huge impact when he came on, and we are delighted to be in the semi-finals," he said.

Match-winner Umar also expressed his delight after continuing his scoring streak.

"Alhamdulillah for scoring the winner today. It was a complete team effort. Scoring in two consecutive games is special for me, and I thank God for the opportunity. I will keep working hard to help the team achieve its objectives," the forward stated.

With momentum building and confidence soaring, Nasarawa United will now shift attention to their semi-final date with Ikorodu City as they continue their quest for a first President Federation Cup title.

The dramatic triumph underscores the tactical depth and resilience within the Solid Miners' squad as they head into the penultimate stage of the competition. Overcoming a formidable regional opponent in this manner provides a major psychological boost ahead of their next knockout fixture. The upcoming encounter against Ikorodu City FC presents a direct path to the grand finale and an opportunity to secure historic domestic honors.
