Plateau United booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 President Federation Cup after edging spirited Nigeria National League (NNL) side FC Basira 2-1 in a closely contested Round of 16 encounter at the FIFA Goal Project Field in Abuja on Saturday.
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) outfit demonstrated their quality early in the contest and were rewarded in the 26th minute when Paul Magit produced a brilliant individual effort to break the deadlock. His composed finish gave Plateau United a deserved 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
Gbenga Ogunbote's side returned for the second half with renewed intensity and doubled their advantage just two minutes after the restart. Dawa Victor capped off a well-worked attacking move to put the Jos-based club firmly in control at 2-0.
FC Basira, however, refused to go down without a fight. The Lafia-based side found a lifeline in the 62nd minute when second-half substitute Sunday Aluku reduced the deficit, setting up a tense finish to the match.
Encouraged by the goal, Basira pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Plateau United's defence remained resolute under sustained pressure.
The NPFL side managed the closing stages effectively, frustrating their lower-division opponents and preserving their narrow lead until the final whistle.
The victory sends Plateau United into the last eight of Nigeria's oldest domestic cup competition, where they will face fellow NPFL side Nasarawa United in what promises to be an intriguing quarter-final clash next week.
