Pelican Stars began their 2026 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship campaign on a positive note with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ikukuoma Queens in their opening Group fixture at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar.
The hosts showed resilience and composure to claim all three points after responding strongly to Ikukuoma Queens' second-half equaliser in an entertaining contest.
Pelican Stars controlled much of the first half and deservedly took the lead in the 38th minute through Amarachi Abel, whose composed finish rewarded the home side's attacking dominance and handed them a 1-0 advantage at halftime.
Ikukuoma Queens emerged from the break with renewed determination and restored parity five minutes into the second half. Ewa Peace capitalised on the visitors' improved performance to score in the 50th minute, setting up a thrilling contest.
The equaliser, however, only inspired Pelican Stars to increase their intensity. Their response came eight minutes later when Daniel Catherine found the back of the net in the 58th minute, restoring the hosts' lead with what proved to be the match-winning goal.
Ikukuoma Queens pushed forward in search of another equaliser during the closing stages, but Pelican Stars remained well organised defensively and managed the game effectively to preserve their narrow advantage until the final whistle.
The victory gives Pelican Stars an ideal start to their promotion campaign and places them in a strong early position as the championship progresses in Calabar.
For Ikukuoma Queens, the defeat represents an early setback, but they will look to bounce back in their remaining fixtures as the race for promotion to the NWFL Premiership intensifies.
