Police Machine booked their place in the 2026 Nationwide League One (NLO) playoffs after grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over RBM Sports in a decisive Match Day 9 encounter where qualification was at stake for both sides.
With Police Machine needing only a draw to advance while RBM Sports required maximum points, the clash began with intensity as both teams understood the magnitude of the fixture.
RBM Sports looked the brighter side in the early exchanges, pushing forward with purpose through the lively Yahaya Abba on the left flank and striker Abuchi Anih leading the line. However, despite their bright start, it was Police Machine who struck first against the run of play.
A loose pass from Enesi Yesufu in midfield gifted possession to Edward Ochigbo, who quickly linked up with Betere Emmanuel before the ball found Chukwuka Horvel.
With space opening up in front of him, Horvel unleashed a powerful long-range effort from about 28 yards that caught goalkeeper Shamsudeen Aderemi off guard and flew into the net in the 14th minute.
The goal shifted momentum in favour of Police Machine, who suddenly looked more composed and dangerous going forward.
RBM attempted to respond immediately as Abuchi Anih connected with a square pass from the right wing, but his close-range effort was brilliantly stopped by Police Machine goalkeeper Amos Maji.
Police Machine continued to threaten through the energetic Horvel, whose pressing game repeatedly unsettled the RBM defence. One of such moments saw him dispossess Samuel Wisdom before setting up Daniel Ijaga, but Aderemi reacted quickly to deny the attacker with an excellent save.
Horvel remained central to Police Machine’s attacking threat and nearly created another clear chance after stealing possession from Enesi once again. His pass released Simeon Ambugadu in behind, but hesitation from the forward allowed RBM to recover.
The pressure from Police Machine continued as Ismail Yunusa carried the ball forward from defence before exchanging passes with Innocent Elijah in a swift attacking move. The resulting cross found Ambugadu unmarked inside the box, but Aderemi produced a fingertip save to keep RBM alive.
RBM Sports almost found an equaliser just before halftime during a frantic goalmouth scramble after Amos Maji failed to deal properly with a header from Enesi. Amid desperate defensive clearances, the ball eventually dropped kindly for Abuchi Anih, but his header drifted narrowly wide.
The second half saw RBM Sports make tactical adjustments with fresh legs introduced in search of a comeback. One of the substitutes, Raymond Promise, nearly made an instant impact after Yahaya Abba delivered a dangerous cross following a strong solo run by Enesi from deep. Promise connected sharply with the delivery, but Amos Maji stood firm again with another vital save.
Police Machine, however, continued to create the clearer openings. Edward Ochigbo tested Aderemi from a free-kick before the RBM goalkeeper produced perhaps the save of the match moments later.
Yusuf Aliyu combined brilliantly with Betere Emmanuel to break into the area before forcing Aderemi into a strong save. The rebound fell kindly to Chukwuka Horvel from close range, but the goalkeeper reacted quickly again to complete a superb double stop.
Despite late pressure and a few promising situations for RBM Sports, the cutting edge required to rescue the match never arrived as Police Machine defended resolutely until the final whistle.
The narrow victory ultimately secured Police Machine’s qualification for the NLO playoffs, capping off a disciplined and determined performance in one of the most important fixtures of their campaign.
This crucial Match Day 9 triumph highlights the resilience and defensive organization that define the Police Machine squad. By weathering the relentless attacking spells from RBM Sports and capitalising on their early momentum, the team demonstrated their readiness for the high-stakes playoff environment. The performance provides a substantial morale boost as they advance further into their promotion campaign.
