EFCC FC kicked off their 2026 Nationwide League One (NLO) campaign with a hard-earned 1–0 victory over a spirited Fire Service FC side in a tightly contested encounter at Area 3 Pitch A.
The decisive moment came early, with captain Adonis Richard showing composure and precision to separate the two sides.
Latching onto a well-weighted long pass from midfield, Richard timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap before calmly lifting the ball over the advancing goalkeeper. His two-touch finish, control, and a delicate lob proved enough to settle the contest.
EFCC dictated proceedings for much of the first half, controlling possession and setting the tempo with confidence.
However, the second half told a different story as Fire Service FC returned from the break with renewed intensity, pushing higher up the pitch and creating more attacking opportunities.
Their best chance to restore parity fell to Michael Ebuka, who found himself clean through on goal midway into the second half. With only the goalkeeper to beat, expectations rose, but his effort lacked precision and was comfortably gathered, letting EFCC off the hook.
Despite maintaining their lead, EFCC were far from clinical in front of goal. Several promising chances, particularly from close-range cutbacks, went begging, leaving the contest precariously balanced heading into the final stages.
Fire Service nearly punished those missed opportunities in dramatic fashion late on. A dangerous cross into the box found Samuel Effiong, whose header beat the goalkeeper but was heroically cleared off the line by Ridwan Ibrahim, preserving EFCC’s narrow advantage.
Further late pressure saw Issac “Kante” break free in a threatening position, but he too failed to convert, summing up Fire Service’s frustrating evening in front of goal.
EFCC had a chance to put the result beyond doubt in stoppage time, but John Eze was unable to capitalise on a loose ball in the box. Nevertheless, the anti-corruption side held firm through the closing moments to secure all three points.
While EFCC will take confidence from their defensive resilience and winning start, questions remain about their finishing.
For Fire Service FC, the performance offered promise, but profligacy in key moments ultimately proved costly.
The narrow victory provides EFCC FC with a crucial foundation for their NLO season, highlighting their ability to grind out results under pressure. Both teams displayed competitive spirits that suggest a high level of intensity for the upcoming fixtures in the campaign.
