The Nationwide League One (NLO) has postponed the start of the 2026 NLO Cup by one week. The competition will now begin on Saturday, October 17, instead of the original date of October 10. Organisers said the change would give them and participating clubs more time to complete preparations.
In a revised notice circulated to participating clubs, the NLO Secretariat cited logistical arrangements, maintenance work at designated venues and outstanding registration and administrative requirements. The league said the adjustment was made in the overall interest of the competition, with the aim of ensuring that the necessary arrangements are completed before kick-off.
The organisers also confirmed that the official fixtures would be released no later than Tuesday, October 13. The schedule is expected to give clubs time to organise travel, settle technical plans and prepare for their opening matches.
The Secretariat acknowledged that the revised date could affect travel arrangements and other preparations. It urged participating clubs to cooperate with the organisers and continue training ahead of the new start date.
The delay comes as the NLO prepares to introduce a revamped format for the competition. Earlier reports said the 2026 NLO Cup would use a regional home-and-away league system, replacing the single-match knockout approach. The new structure is intended to give participating teams more competitive fixtures and more opportunities to develop their players.
NLO Chief Operating Officer Olushola Ogunnowo previously explained that the expanded schedule would allow clubs to play more matches, help coaches improve their teams and give players greater exposure. The league has also indicated that the format should strengthen fan engagement and give clubs more chances to play in front of their home supporters.
The competition is part of the NLO’s efforts to strengthen grassroots football and create a clearer platform for emerging talent in Nigeria. Its wider reach and planned digital coverage are also intended to improve visibility for clubs and players, including those hoping to attract attention from scouts.
With the new kick-off date confirmed, clubs now await the fixtures expected by October 13. The additional week will give organisers time to address outstanding venue and administrative issues before the tournament begins.
