2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Rwanda’s Amavubi to Arrive Nigeria on Tuesday

Posted : 01 September 2025

Rwanda’s delegation for Saturday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria is scheduled to arrive in Lagos on Tuesday afternoon.

An advance party is expected in Lagos on Monday, while the full contingent will land aboard a RwandAir flight at 1:15 pm on Tuesday before proceeding to Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, by 4:00 pm the same day.

The Matchday 7 encounter is crucial for both teams, with group leaders South Africa currently on 13 points—pending FIFA’s decision on their use of an ineligible player in their March victory over Lesotho. Rwanda sit second in the group with eight points, level with Benin Republic, while Nigeria trail in fourth with seven points. Lesotho follow with six points, and Zimbabwe sit bottom with four.

While the football world awaits FIFA’s ruling, both Nigeria and Rwanda will fight for maximum points to stay in contention for qualification and potentially capitalize on any sanction against Bafana Bafana. Should South Africa be penalized, the Crocodiles of Lesotho could leap to nine points.

Saturday’s clash at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium comes five months and two weeks after the Super Eagles defeated the Amavubi 2-0 in Kigali during Matchday 5. It also marks a return to the same stadium where Rwanda shocked Nigeria 2-1 in a dramatic 2025 AFCON qualification match, though that victory ultimately failed to secure Rwanda a ticket to the continental tournament.

Looking ahead, Rwanda will host bottom-placed Zimbabwe on Matchday 8, while Nigeria face a daunting away trip to Bloemfontein to challenge group leaders South Africa.
