Edo Queens’ hopes of returning to the continental stage remain unresolved after the draw for the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League placed the yet-to-be-confirmed WAFU Zone B representative in a challenging Group B alongside defending champions AS FAR Rabat.
The Nigerian champions must settle their qualification dispute with Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies before the eight-team tournament begins in Egypt from November 1 to 15.
The WAFU B final, scheduled to resume on October 24, will determine which club claims the region’s continental ticket after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) overturned the original penalty shootout result.
Edo Queens had initially appeared to secure qualification after defeating Ampem Darkoa 4-1 on penalties following a 2-2 draw in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on September 5.
However, CAF ruled that the match should have proceeded to extra time before penalties could be taken. The decision was upheld by the CAF Appeal Board on October 16, directing both teams to resume the contest from the beginning of extra time with the score still level at 2-2.
The remaining 30 minutes will therefore determine whether either side can settle the contest in open play, with a fresh penalty shootout required if the teams remain level.
For Edo Queens, the rematch offers an opportunity to complete their qualification campaign and erase the disappointment of having their earlier shootout victory annulled. Ampem Darkoa, meanwhile, will seek to convert their successful appeal into a place at the continental championship.
The winner will join AS FAR, Uganda’s Kawempe Muslim Ladies, and Mali’s USFAS Bamako in Group B, where the defending champions will begin their title defence against Kawempe Muslim on November 2.
AS FAR will subsequently face USFAS Bamako on November 5 before concluding their group campaign against the WAFU B representative on November 8.
Group A features hosts FC Masar, two-time champions Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, Morocco’s Fath Union Sport Rabat, and Cameroon’s Lekié Football Girls.
Sundowns will open their campaign against FC Masar on November 1, while FUS Rabat face Lekié in the other Group A fixture.
The second round of Group A matches is scheduled for November 4, with the final group fixtures taking place on November 7.
The group stage will run until November 8, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the semi-finals on November 11.
The third-place match is scheduled for November 14, while the final will take place on November 15.
Egypt will host the competition for the second consecutive year, with eight clubs expected to compete for Africa’s premier women’s club football title.
While the draw has established the group-stage matchups, the unresolved WAFU B final remains a significant piece of the qualification puzzle.
For Nigeria, the immediate focus is on Edo Queens’ ability to navigate the rematch and secure a place among the continent’s elite, with their fate set to be decided on the pitch before the tournament kicks off.
