Ballon d’Or Race Heats Up as Top Contenders Step Up Campaigns

The battle for the 2026 Ballon d’Or is entering its decisive phase, with leading contenders increasingly making their claims for football’s most prestigious individual award. The 30-man shortlist was announced by France Football on September 8, while the winner will be revealed at a ceremony in London on October 26.

Unlike previous years, when the award often received limited attention until the ceremony itself, the Ballon d’Or has become a major talking point during the opening weeks of the European season. With no overwhelming favourite, players and their representatives are using interviews and public appearances to highlight their achievements.

The award does not come with a direct cash prize, but winning it can significantly enhance a player's profile, commercial appeal and earning potential. Players can benefit from sponsorship incentives, while clubs can also enjoy increased global exposure and merchandise sales.

Voting is conducted by 100 journalists, with each representative coming from one of the top 100 nations in the FIFA men's world ranking. That voting system has made the final weeks before the ceremony increasingly important as contenders attempt to strengthen their cases.

Yamal and Mbappé Make Their Cases

Barcelona and Spain star Lamine Yamal has been particularly vocal about his chances. The teenager believes he and Kylian Mbappé are among the two strongest candidates and argued that his achievements during the year make him deserving of the award.

Yamal's case is strengthened by Spain's World Cup triumph and his success with Barcelona. The 19-year-old has also made history by becoming the first player to receive three Ballon d'Or nominations before turning 20.

Mbappé, meanwhile, has highlighted his individual achievements despite not winning a major trophy with Real Madrid or France. The French forward became the World Cup's all-time leading scorer after an outstanding tournament and also finished as the leading scorer in both La Liga and the Champions League last season.

The Real Madrid forward has made it clear that he would vote for himself, while his manager, José Mourinho, has also backed his credentials.

PSG Provide Strong Contenders

Paris Saint-Germain have a significant presence on the shortlist after retaining the Champions League. Ousmane Dembélé, the reigning Ballon d'Or winner, is joined among the leading PSG candidates by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Fabián Ruiz.

Ruiz has a particularly strong argument after becoming the only player on the shortlist to win both the World Cup and Champions League during the year. The Spanish midfielder has welcomed the possibility of winning the award but has maintained a low-key approach to the campaign.

PSG coach Luis Enrique has refused to select a single favourite from his squad, instead arguing that several of his players deserve consideration. Dembélé has similarly said the decision belongs to the voters and that the strongest candidate should win.

Kane Also in the Spotlight

Harry Kane remains one of the leading contenders after an outstanding season with Bayern Munich and England. The England captain scored 61 goals for Bayern and helped the German club secure a domestic double before also making a major contribution to England's World Cup campaign.

Kane has largely avoided the public campaigning surrounding some of his rivals, but Bayern have been more vocal on his behalf. The German club released a video featuring teammates backing their captain for the prize.

Among those supporting Kane is Liverpool forward Luis Díaz, who is also on the shortlist.

With the ceremony approaching, the race remains wide open, with Kane, Yamal, Mbappé, Dembélé and several other contenders all possessing strong arguments. The final decision will come from the international voting panel when the winner is announced in London on October 26.
