Akwa United have responded to their recent league disappointment in emphatic fashion, cruising into the final of the 2026 Akwa Ibom State FA Cup with a commanding 4–0 victory over Heaven’s Race Academy.
Still reeling from narrowly missing out on promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), the Promise Keepers delivered a statement performance in the semi-final, underlining their quality and intent to finish the season on a high.
Goals from Daniel Gothom, Yannick Menegbe, and a clinical brace by Aniebiet Sunday powered the Uyo-based side to a comfortable win, but the scoreline only tells part of the story.
The Promise Keepers dominated proceedings from the outset, though they were briefly frustrated by a resilient Heaven’s Race defence and an inspired goalkeeper who notably denied Charles Etim from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute.
The breakthrough eventually arrived just before the interval, as Gothom showcased blistering pace and composure to fire Akwa United ahead.
After the restart, the contest tilted firmly in favour of the reigning state champions. Menegbe doubled the lead in the 56th minute with a well-timed header, before Sunday took centre stage, netting twice to cap off a ruthless second-half display.
Beyond securing a place in the state final, the victory carries even greater significance. Akwa United have officially qualified for the 2026 Nigeria President Federation Cup—Nigeria’s premier domestic knockout tournament.
They will now turn their attention to the final showdown against Godswill Akpabio United FC, scheduled for April 25 at the Uyo Township Stadium, where they will aim to lift the state title once again.
With a proud pedigree in the Federation Cup, having lifted the trophy in 2015 and 2017, Akwa United now have a fresh opportunity to reignite their national ambitions and remind fans of their enduring pedigree on the big stage.
The dominant semi-final victory marks a significant turning point for Akwa United as they move past their league setbacks. By securing a spot in both the state final and the national President Federation Cup, the Promise Keepers have reaffirmed their status as a powerhouse in Nigerian football. Fans now look forward to the final at Uyo Township Stadium with renewed hope for another silverware addition.
