2026 Abia FA Cup: Giant killers again, Ahudiyannem FC shock Abia Warriors to reach final

Posted : 24 April 2026

Ahudiyannem FC once again proved that pedigree counts for little in cup football, producing a disciplined and resilient display to eliminate Nigeria Premier Football League side Abia Warriors and secure a place in the final of the 2026 Abia State President Federation Cup.

The third-tier side from Abiriba triumphed 4–3 on penalties after a goalless encounter in regulation time, repeating last year’s feat against the same opposition and underlining their growing reputation as true cup specialists.

From the opening whistle, Abia Warriors controlled possession and dictated tempo, but their dominance lacked the cutting edge required to break down a well-organized Ahudiyannem defence.

An early chance fell to Yakub Hammed inside two minutes, but his effort deflected wide for a corner, setting the tone for a frustrating afternoon for the Umuahia-based side.

The Warriors’ clearest opportunity of the first half came in the 31st minute when they were awarded a penalty.

However, goalkeeper Uche Nwobodo emerged as the hero, producing a fine save to deny Paul Samson from the spot. Suraj Lawal had earlier tested the shot-stopper, but the Ahudiyannem keeper stood firm, ensuring his side went into the break unscathed.

Despite tactical adjustments in the second half, including the introduction of Valentine Ugwu and Israel Joseph, Abia Warriors continued to struggle in the final third.

Their attacking play improved in intensity but remained wasteful, with a glaring miss in the 59th minute summing up their day; Chindi Merpring failing to convert from close range after a precise delivery from Lawal.

At the other end, Ahudiyannem offered little in attack but maintained defensive discipline, rarely troubling goalkeeper Sharp Uzoigwe. Their strategy was clear: absorb pressure, stay compact, and take their chances if they came.

With neither side able to find a breakthrough, the match was decided by penalties.

Once again, Abia Warriors faltered under pressure, missing two of their spot-kicks, while Ahudiyannem held their nerve to convert four and seal a famous victory.

The victory ensures Ahudiyannem FC continues their remarkable run of form as they prepare to defend their title against the regional powerhouse, Enyimba International FC. Abia Warriors will be left to rue their missed opportunities and a costly penalty failure that ended their cup aspirations. This result further cements the Abiriba side's status as a formidable force capable of toppling the elite in Nigerian football.
