Rivers United have boosted their squad ahead of the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season with the acquisition of three key players from Kun Khalifat FC.
The Port Harcourt club has successfully secured the services of captain Chikamso Amaefula, defender Blessed Iyamu, and forward Ekebuike James as part of an ambitious recruitment drive aimed at building a strong title-challenging side and a competitive squad for continental football.
Amaefula arrives with a reputation as a commanding leader who played a crucial role in guiding Kun Khalifat through a difficult campaign. His leadership qualities and consistency are expected to add stability and experience to Rivers United's setup.
Defender Iyamu also joins the Pride of Rivers after establishing himself as one of Kun Khalifat's most dependable performers. His resilience and commitment made him a fan favourite during his time in Owerri.
Completing the trio is striker Ekebuike James, whose goals and relentless work ethic proved vital in helping Kun Khalifat retain their NPFL status last season. Rivers United will hope his attacking qualities provide additional firepower in the coming campaign.
While Kun Khalifat have officially confirmed the departures and bid farewell to the players, Rivers United are yet to formally unveil the new arrivals.
The exits represent a significant rebuilding challenge for the Owerri-based club, which narrowly escaped relegation last season after finishing 13th with 49 points following an impressive six-match unbeaten run to end the campaign.
In response, Kun Khalifat have moved swiftly in the transfer market, securing the signing of highly-rated KADO FC striker Ekebuike Chinedu Everistus on a long-term contract running until 2029.
Nicknamed the "Black Haaland" because of his physical strength and clinical finishing ability, Everistus is expected to spearhead the club's attacking revamp as management looks to avoid another relegation battle and push for a stronger league campaign in 2026/27.
The upcoming season promises intense competition as both teams recalibrate their strategies with these significant squad changes. Rivers United's ambitious recruitment signals their intent to challenge for top honours domestically and continentally. Meanwhile, Kun Khalifat’s swift acquisition of Everistus highlights their determination to rewrite their narrative and ensure stability in the top flight.
