2026/2027 NPFL Season: Katsina United Strengthen Squad with Former Akwa United Captain Essien

Katsina United have bolstered their squad for the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign with the signing of former Akwa United captain Ubong Essien on a two-year contract.

Essien, fondly called "Kante," headlines a list of 10 new arrivals unveiled by the Katsina-based club as it steps up preparations for the new top-flight season.

The experienced defensive midfielder joins Katsina United after leading Akwa United during the 2025/2026 campaign in the Nigeria National League (NNL), bringing leadership and top-flight experience to his new side.

His move also marks a return to the NPFL, where he is expected to play a key role in strengthening the midfield as Katsina United seek an improved outing in the new season.

Having spent part of his early years in northern Nigeria, Essien is expected to adapt quickly to life in Katsina, with his familiarity with the region's culture, language and weather seen as an added advantage.

The club officially presented the new recruits during an unveiling ceremony at its secretariat inside the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina.

Speaking at the event, Katsina United Chairman and Supervising Coordinator, Surajo Malumfashi, said the latest recruitment drive reflects the club's ambition to assemble a competitive team capable of meeting its objectives in the forthcoming season.

Other players unveiled include goalkeepers Koroma Francis and Kolawale Oladipo, defenders Eric Ekpere, Emmanuel Bakare, Chinedu Ozor Benjamin and Abba Musa, midfielder Michael Ibeh Okoro, winger Joshua Akpan, striker Samson Obi and forward Lius Dadong.

While most of the new arrivals signed two-year contracts, Dadong agreed to a one-year deal.

The latest additions are expected to boost competition for places as Katsina United continue preparations ahead of the kick-off of the 2026/2027 NPFL season, with the club aiming to make a strong impact in the league.

The arrival of Essien and the other new signings highlights Katsina United's determination to strengthen the squad ahead of the new campaign. The club will be hoping the blend of experience and fresh talent translates into improved performances and a successful NPFL season.
