2026/2027 NPFL Match Day 1: Tornadoes Beat Enyimba 2-1 in First Season Game

Niger Tornadoes left it late to secure a winning start to the 2026/27 EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, edging Enyimba 2-1 at the Bako Kontagora Stadium, Minna, on Sunday.

The Minna side looked set for a share of the points after Enyimba recovered from a first-half deficit, but Olalususi Michael produced the decisive moment in the 83rd minute to hand Tornadoes maximum points.

Tornadoes started the encounter on the front foot, mounting sustained pressure on the visitors and creating opportunities in search of an early breakthrough.

Enyimba goalkeeper Utum Godswill, however, produced several important saves to frustrate the hosts and keep the People’s Elephants in contention.

The visitors soon showed that they could threaten at the other end when Jonah James broke clear on the right and unleashed a shot at goal, forcing Tornadoes goalkeeper Derrick Julu to react quickly and parry the effort away.

Tornadoes eventually found the breakthrough in the 38th minute after Chibueze was adjudged to have committed a foul inside the penalty area.

Aliyu Goyi made no mistake from the spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Enyimba returned from the break determined to restore parity and were rewarded in the 72nd minute.

Substitute Wonah Williams rose above the Tornadoes defence to head home a well-delivered free kick from Iheme Peculiar, bringing the visitors level at 1-1.

The equaliser sparked a tense closing period, with both teams creating half chances as they searched for the winning goal.

It was Tornadoes who eventually found the breakthrough.

Olalususi Michael settled the contest in the 83rd minute with a well-taken strike that restored the hosts’ lead and secured all three points.

Enyimba pushed forward in search of another equaliser, but Tornadoes held firm to protect their advantage and complete a victorious start to the new campaign.

The result gives Tornadoes an early boost as they begin their 2026/27 NPFL campaign, while Enyimba will have to regroup after suffering a narrow opening-day defeat.
