2026/2027 NNL Opener: Amuneke Targets Winning Start as Heartland Host Crown FC

Posted : 01 November 2026

Heartland FC will begin their quest for promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) when they host Crown FC of Ogbomoso in the opening fixture of the 2026/2027 Nigeria National League (NNL) season on Sunday.

The Conference A encounter, scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, is expected to attract prominent football administrators, including officials of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade have confirmed their attendance, alongside NFF Acting General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme and former NNL Chairman George Aluo.

Their presence is expected to underscore the importance of the second-tier league as a platform for developing players and preparing clubs for promotion to the country's top-flight division.

For Heartland, the opening fixture represents an opportunity to establish early momentum in their campaign to return to the NPFL.

Head Coach Emmanuel Amuneke acknowledged that Crown FC would provide a difficult test but expressed confidence in his team's readiness for the encounter.

He also called on supporters and well-meaning individuals to rally behind the Naze Millionaires as they pursue their promotion ambition.

Crown FC, however, will travel to Owerri determined to frustrate the hosts and secure a positive result despite the emotional setback caused by the recent death of their team driver.

Head Coach Fatai Akande assured supporters that the Ajilete Warriors remained focused on the task ahead and were prepared to compete for points against the hosts.

The encounter brings together two ambitious sides seeking a strong start to the new campaign, with Heartland banking on home advantage and Crown FC hoping to spoil the hosts' celebrations.

With the presence of prominent football administrators adding significance to the occasion, the fixture is expected to provide an exciting start to the 2026/2027 NNL season.
