2026/2027 NNL: Akwa United Hand Etim Captain's Armband Ahead of Promotion Quest

Posted : 06 November 2026

Akwa United have turned to former youth international Charles Etim to lead their promotion campaign after appointing the defender as club captain ahead of the 2026/2027 Nigeria National League (NNL) season.

Etim succeeds Ubong Essien, who has departed the club for Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Katsina United.

The former Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles defender steps into the leadership role after serving as one of the team's assistant captains last season.

He will be supported by a three-man leadership group comprising Flying Eagles defender Somto Nnoli, 2025/2026 Akwa United/Ibom Air Player of the Season Paulinus Okon, and goalkeeper Okechukwu Johnson.

The appointment comes as the Promise Keepers intensify preparations for another campaign, with the ultimate objective of securing promotion to the NPFL.

Coach Paul Offor's side will begin their NNL campaign against Ekiti United on Sunday, Nov. 8, at the Uyo Township Stadium.

The encounter is scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m., with Akwa United targeting maximum points in front of their home supporters to set the tone for the new season.

Etim's experience at youth international level and previous involvement in the club's leadership structure are expected to strengthen the team's leadership as they pursue their promotion ambition.
