2026/2027 EuroMatch Rescheduled NPFL Match Day 9: Rangers Reclaim NPFL Summit After Hard-Fought Win Over Bendel Insurance

Posted : 06 November 2026

Rangers International underlined their title ambitions with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bendel Insurance in their rescheduled Matchday 9 fixture of the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), reclaiming the top position in the standings.

The defending champions relied on Chidozie Iwundu’s decisive second-half header to overcome a stubborn Bendel Insurance side at the Awka City Stadium, extending their points tally to 21 from 10 matches.

Despite enjoying home advantage, the Flying Antelopes endured a difficult opening period as the visitors dictated much of the attacking play and created several promising opportunities.

Bendel Insurance threatened early through Alex Oweifaleya, whose free-kick from about 25 yards caused problems for Rangers goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh.

The visitors maintained their attacking momentum, with Chinedu Nwosu coming close in the 11th minute after skilfully beating Philip Clement before sending his effort narrowly wide.

Rangers gradually found their rhythm, with Joel Odoh forcing a save from Insurance goalkeeper Orya Joseph through a long-range attempt.

However, the hosts struggled to translate their attacking movements into clear-cut opportunities, as Iwundu also sent a free-kick over the crossbar.

Captain Chidiebere Nwobodo nearly broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when he flicked Odoh's teasing delivery towards goal, but his effort missed the target.

Insurance continued to expose gaps in the Rangers defence, with Jimoh becoming increasingly important to the hosts.

The goalkeeper denied Oweifaleya in the 25th minute before producing another impressive save to keep out Nwosu's curling effort following a combination involving Jonathan James and Oke.

Jimoh again came to Rangers' rescue in the 33rd minute, using his legs to stop Oweifaleya after Lekan Freeman Wuchirwe's square pass found the forward in a dangerous position.

Rangers attempted to respond through Ikechukwu Mgbemena and Emo James, while Abolade Akorode also went close with a long-range effort in the 36th minute.

Insurance squandered another opportunity shortly before the break when Jonathan James delivered a dangerous cross after capitalising on a misplaced pass, but Oke failed to connect.

The visitors' inability to convert their first-half dominance eventually proved costly.

Rangers returned from the interval with greater purpose, immediately putting Joseph under pressure through Odoh's powerful effort before a long throw created another opportunity.

Emo James rose highest to meet the delivery, but Joseph produced an excellent save. Iwundu reacted quickest to the rebound, heading home from close range in the 49th minute to give the hosts the lead.

The goal changed the complexion of the contest, with Rangers growing in confidence while Insurance searched for an equaliser.

Iwundu almost doubled his contribution when he connected with another inviting cross from Folarin Temitope, but Joseph kept out his effort.

Emo James also threatened with a powerful strike that rattled the side netting as Rangers pushed for a second goal.

Despite their inability to extend the advantage, the hosts demonstrated defensive resilience to protect their slender lead and secure three valuable points.

The victory lifts Rangers to 21 points from 10 matches, moving them above second-placed Rivers United, who have 18 points from 11 games.

Bendel Insurance remain fourth with 18 points from 11 matches, having missed the opportunity to strengthen their position following an encouraging first-half display.

For Rangers, the result represents an important statement in their title defence, with the Flying Antelopes now enjoying a timely return to the summit.

They will seek to consolidate their position when they welcome Kwara United to Awka on Sunday, while Bendel Insurance will be left to reflect on the missed opportunities that ultimately denied them a share of the points.
