Rivers United maintained their unbeaten start to the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season after battling Katsina United to a 1-1 draw in their rescheduled Matchday 2 fixture on Wednesday at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium.
The result saw Rivers United extend their unbeaten run under coach Finidi George to six matches, comprising three wins and three draws, while Katsina United were left to rue their failure to convert home advantage into maximum points.
Katsina United, the Changi Boys, had targeted consecutive home victories after defeating Doma United 2-1 last weekend.
However, Rivers United responded strongly after falling behind shortly after the restart, with Samson Olasupo putting the visitors ahead.
Katsina United quickly restored parity through Sani Mubarak, who curled home a free-kick in the 50th minute to make it 1-1.
Both sides pushed for the decisive goal, but disciplined defending ensured that the scores remained level until the final whistle.
Katsina United later described the outcome as disappointing, although the club praised the players for their performance in a post on X.
The Changi Boys will take eight points from six matches into their next fixture, having recorded two wins, two draws, and two defeats to sit 11th on the table.
Rivers United, meanwhile, moved to 12 points, one behind leaders Enugu Rangers, after securing another valuable point on the road.
The Port Harcourt-based side’s defensive record has also remained impressive, with only two goals conceded in six league matches.
Katsina United will return to action on Sunday, October 4, when they travel to face Inter Lagos in a 4 p.m. kick-off.
Rivers United will also be away that day, taking on Ikorodu City as they seek to preserve their unbeaten beginning to the campaign.
Ikorodu City enter the encounter with confidence after defeating Rangers 2-0 on Matchday 6 before playing out a goalless draw with Sporting Lagos on Wednesday.
The clash therefore presents Rivers United with another opportunity to strengthen their position near the top of the NPFL standings, while Katsina United will seek to turn their encouraging performance against Rivers United into a positive result in Lagos.
