Sporting Lagos delivered one of the most remarkable results of Matchday 9 in the 2026/2027 EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), rallying from a goal down to defeat Plateau United 3–2 at the New Jos Stadium.
Jacob Aondona struck late to complete the comeback, handing the Lagos-based side all three points while inflicting Plateau United’s first home defeat of the campaign.
The victory highlighted Sporting Lagos’ growing confidence on the road, with the visitors demonstrating attacking determination to overturn a deficit against a Plateau United side that had thrashed Kano Pillars 4–0 in their previous league outing.
Sporting Lagos made an encouraging start when Aliyu Baba put them ahead in the 10th minute, capitalising on an opportunity to unsettle the home defence.
Plateau United responded with renewed urgency, gradually taking control of the contest and turning the scoreline around through Victor Dawa.
The midfielder restored parity in the 35th minute before striking again in first-half stoppage time to give the Peace Boys a 2–1 advantage at the interval.
Having surrendered their early lead, Sporting Lagos returned for the second half with greater purpose. Their response came in the 53rd minute when Victor Samuel found the net to restore parity at 2–2.
The equaliser shifted the momentum, leaving the contest finely balanced as both teams searched for a decisive goal.
Plateau United’s task became more difficult in the 80th minute when Alex Aghahowa received a second yellow card and was sent off, reducing the hosts to 10 men for the closing stages.
Sporting Lagos capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Aondona delivering the decisive blow in the 82nd minute to complete the turnaround and silence the home crowd.
The late strike capped a determined performance by the visitors, who refused to settle for a point despite facing a team buoyed by an emphatic home victory the previous weekend.
Beyond the three points, the result reinforced Sporting Lagos’ reputation as a difficult opponent away from home. A report by ACLSports noted that the club became the first team in the 2026/27 NPFL season to reach double figures in away points, with 10 points accumulated on the road at that stage of the campaign.
For Plateau United, the defeat represented a setback after their impressive 4–0 victory over Kano Pillars. Their inability to protect a first-half lead, followed by Aghahowa’s dismissal, proved costly in a match that exposed defensive vulnerabilities under sustained pressure.
The outcome also underlined the competitive nature of the league, where home advantage offers no guarantee of victory and matches can turn decisively in the closing stages.
Sporting Lagos will take confidence from their comeback as they continue their campaign, while Plateau United must regroup quickly to prevent one defeat from undermining the progress made in previous weeks.
For the Lagos side, the triumph in Jos was more than an away victory; it was a statement of resilience, attacking ambition, and growing belief in their ability to compete against the league’s leading teams.
