2026/2027 EuroMatch NPFL Matchday 9: Rivers United Stumble as Barau Hold Firm in Port Harcourt

Posted : 20 October 2026

Rivers United missed an opportunity to strengthen their challenge for the top spot in the 2026/2027 EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after Barau FC held them to a goalless draw at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.

The Matchday 9 encounter, which began on Sunday, was suspended in the 77th minute following heavy rainfall that left the playing surface waterlogged and unplayable. Play resumed on Monday morning, with neither side able to find a decisive breakthrough.

The result offered Barau a valuable away point while leaving Rivers United frustrated after a match in which their possession advantage failed to translate into goals.

The Pride of Rivers entered the fixture seeking to capitalise on their strong start to the campaign and move closer to the league summit. However, the visitors' disciplined defensive display ensured that the hosts' attacking efforts yielded little reward.

Rivers United began with greater attacking intent, seeking to impose themselves on home turf, but Barau remained compact and organised, limiting the space available to their opponents in the final third.

Despite the pressure, the Maliya Boys also showed enough attacking ambition to trouble the hosts. Kumaga Sur, Daddy Abdulrahman, and Stanley Oganbor featured in promising moves as Barau sought to exploit opportunities on the counterattack.

The first significant opening fell to Rivers United in the 23rd minute, when striker Samson Olasupo failed to convert a clear chance from close range.

Barau responded with an opportunity of their own in the 36th minute, but Daddy Abdulrahman could not turn Stanley Oganbor's through pass into a goal.

The missed chances left the contest finely balanced, with both teams struggling to find the precision required to break the deadlock.

Conditions deteriorated further in the second half as persistent rainfall made the pitch increasingly difficult to play on. Match officials eventually halted proceedings in the 77th minute, with the score still 0–0.

When the game resumed the following morning, Rivers United continued searching for a winner, while Barau maintained their defensive discipline under mounting pressure.

Goalkeeper Chisom Chiaha proved instrumental in preserving the visitors' clean sheet, producing a crucial save in the 87th minute to divert Elias Ochobi's free kick for a corner.

Barau subsequently weathered six minutes of added time to secure a hard-earned point from one of the league's challenging away assignments.

The draw also highlighted the Maliya Boys' growing competitiveness in the top flight. Their ability to remain organised away from home, even under sustained pressure and difficult playing conditions, provided another indication of their capacity to challenge established sides.

Barau had entered the fixture following a 2–2 home draw against Rangers International, while Rivers United were coming off a goalless stalemate against Abia Warriors. The Port Harcourt encounter therefore extended a run of consecutive draws for both sides.

According to available Matchday 9 results, Rivers United's failure to secure maximum points kept the race for the top positions tightly contested, with several clubs continuing to jostle for early-season advantage.

For Barau, attention now turns to their next assignment against Kwara United at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofar Mata, Kano. The hosts will be looking to turn their resilient away performance into a home victory.

Rivers United, meanwhile, will need to sharpen their finishing if they are to convert territorial dominance into the wins required to sustain a serious title challenge.
