2026/2027 EuroMatch NPFL Match Day 9: Ekawu’s Return Lifts Barau FC Ahead of Rivers Test

Posted : 18 October 2026

Barau FC will look to turn Hilary Ekawu’s return into a major boost when they visit Rivers United in Sunday’s Matchday 9 fixture of the 2026/2027 EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

The midfielder is back in contention after spending two months on the sidelines with an undisclosed injury, offering the Kano-based side an additional option as they seek to rediscover their winning form.

Barau FC have managed just one point from their last two league matches, losing 4-1 to Bendel Insurance before playing out a 2-2 draw against Rangers International at home.

Ekawu’s return could provide fresh impetus to their attacking play as they prepare to face a Rivers United side that has remained difficult to beat in recent weeks.

The midfielder expressed delight at rejoining his teammates, saying he was eager to make up for the time lost through injury.

“I feel very happy to be back with the team after two months’ absence due to injury,” he said.

He noted that Barau FC had maintained a competitive run despite his absence, suffering only one defeat in their opening eight matches.

“It has psychological effects on me seeing my team do well while I am on the sidelines. But now that I am back, the fans should expect more goals and assists to complement the team,” he added.

However, Barau FC face a stern examination against Rivers United, who have recorded notable results in recent weeks, including a 5-0 victory over Kun Khalifat FC and a 2-0 win against Ikorodu City.

The Pride of Rivers were held to a goalless draw by Abia Warriors in their last outing, leaving them eager to return to winning ways on home soil.

According to the NPFL’s published fixture schedule, the encounter will take place at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

For Barau FC, Ekawu’s availability offers renewed hope, but they will need greater defensive discipline and sharper finishing to overcome the hosts.

The Kano side will be counting on the returning midfielder to make an immediate impact as they attempt to secure a positive result and regain momentum in the league.
