Abia Warriors were left to rue missed opportunities after Rivers United battled to a goalless draw in their 2026/2027 Euromatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day Eight encounter at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba.
The hosts raised their intensity after the break but could not find a way past Rivers United goalkeeper Clinton Andy, who stood firm to help the visitors secure a valuable point from the fiercely contested regional encounter.
The match, which attracted a sizeable crowd, featured tactical discipline, physical battles, and moments of attacking promise, with both sides struggling to convert their opportunities into goals.
Abia Warriors handed Godwin Menyaga his first start, with the youngster delivering an impressive performance against the experienced Rivers United attack. He was the only change to the team that faced Rangers in Awka in their previous league outing.
Rivers United enjoyed more possession during a cagey first half but failed to translate their control into clear-cut chances, as Abia Warriors goalkeeper Ali Ishaku remained largely untroubled.
The home side were forced into an early reshuffle when Effimi Nsi suffered an injury, prompting Augustine Njoku to come on. Emmanuel Nnaji also replaced Ochoche Ngbede as the technical crew adjusted its approach before the interval.
Abia Warriors returned from the break with greater urgency and nearly took the lead within three minutes.
After winning possession, the hosts launched a forward move that sent Nnaji through inside the penalty area. However, his hesitation allowed the Rivers United defence to recover and block the eventual effort.
The introduction of Chidiebere Nnachi and Shedrack Asiegbu further strengthened the hosts' attacking momentum, with the pair combining almost immediately to create another opportunity. Asiegbu's effort, however, was saved by Andy.
Rivers United attempted to reassert their authority, but Abia Warriors maintained their defensive organisation and disrupted the visitors' attacking rhythm.
Menyaga stood out with his energy and determination, while Innocent Godwin controlled the midfield exchanges with an authoritative display that helped the hosts sustain pressure.
The Warriors came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 81st minute when Rivers United failed to clear Njoku's cross, allowing the ball to fall to Nnaji inside the box.
Nnaji, however, was off balance and could only produce a weak effort that Andy comfortably saved, leaving the home supporters frustrated.
Despite mounting pressure in the closing stages, Abia Warriors could not find the decisive goal, as Rivers United held on to preserve their clean sheet and take a point from Aba.
The result leaves the Umu Chineke side to turn their attention to their next league assignment, a trip to Ilorin to face Kwara United in a week's time.
