Rivers United continued their impressive start to the 2026/2027 Euromatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Ikorodu City at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.
The Pride of Rivers made the most of their home advantage, scoring twice in the first half before producing a controlled second-half display to preserve their unbeaten record after seven matches.
Samson Olasupo opened the scoring in the 19th minute, finishing a swift counter-attacking move with strength and composure to beat the advancing Ikorodu City goalkeeper.
The goal extended the forward’s recent scoring form after he also found the target in Rivers United’s 1-1 draw against Katsina United in their previous league outing.
Ikorodu City, popularly known as the Oga Boys, attempted to respond but struggled to match the hosts’ attacking threat as Rivers United continued to create openings.
The pressure eventually paid off again shortly before half-time when Chinemerem Ugwueze doubled the advantage.
The midfielder connected with a cut-back from Shola Oladunjoye to register his second goal of the campaign and give the hosts a commanding 2-0 lead at the interval.
For Oladunjoye, the assist added another highlight to his full debut for the Port Harcourt club.
With the advantage secured, Rivers United adopted a more measured approach after the restart, allowing Ikorodu City to commit more players forward while remaining organised at the back.
The Lagos side pushed in search of a route back into the contest, but Rivers United defended their advantage effectively.
The hosts also had opportunities to add to their tally, although neither side could find the net again before the final whistle.
The victory means Finidi George’s men have now gone seven league matches without defeat, recording four wins and three draws.
Their home form has been particularly impressive, with Rivers United maintaining a perfect record in all their home league fixtures this season.
The result leaves Rivers United second on the NPFL table with 15 points, while Ikorodu City remain on nine points after recording two wins, three draws and two defeats from seven matches.
For the Oga Boys, the loss represents their second defeat of the campaign and another setback in their attempt to maintain their early-season momentum.
The victory was also Rivers United’s second in five meetings with Ikorodu City, while the Lagos side have won two of the previous encounters and one ended in a draw.
Rivers United will now look to extend their strong run as the season progresses, with their unbeaten start putting them firmly among the early contenders at the top of the NPFL standings.
