Bendel Insurance ended Barau FC’s unbeaten start to the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season with a commanding 4-1 victory at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
The Benin Arsenal capitalised on home advantage to produce one of their most impressive displays of the campaign, overwhelming the Maliya Boys with a combination of attacking pressure and late-game efficiency.
Former Shooting Stars forward Kayode Oke set the tone for the hosts by scoring twice, putting Insurance firmly in control of the encounter.
Barau FC briefly threatened a comeback when Aliyu Sugau converted from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit.
The visitors, however, struggled to contain Insurance as the game progressed, with the hosts eventually turning their superiority into a convincing victory.
Suraju Lawal restored Insurance’s advantage with a late goal before Jonathan Mairiga completed the rout, sealing a 4-1 triumph for Kennedy Boboye’s side.
For Barau, the defeat brought an end to their unbeaten run and exposed areas that will require attention ahead of their next fixture.
Barau technical adviser Eugene Agagbe conceded that his side had been beaten by the better team, while praising Insurance for their performance.
“Insurance showed strong character, better than last season. We lost to a very good team. I must admit that they played better today,” Agagbe said.
He noted that Barau attempted to change their approach and apply more pressure, but Insurance responded effectively to frustrate their efforts.
“When we play against a good side and lose, I don’t complain. Instead, we go back to look at how they did it and correct our mistakes,” he added.
Agagbe also congratulated Insurance coach Kennedy Boboye and his players for their performance.
“Congratulations to Coach Kennedy Boboye and his team. They actually played good football today.”
The emphatic victory gives Insurance renewed momentum as they prepare for an away trip to Sporting Lagos.
Barau FC, meanwhile, will seek an immediate response when they host defending champions Rangers in their next league fixture.
