2026/2027 Euromatch NPFL Match Day 5: Sporting Lagos Deepen Enyimba Crisis With Comeback Win

Enyimba's difficult start to the 2026/27 Euromatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season took another turn for the worse as Sporting Lagos fought back to secure a 3-2 victory over the nine-time champions on Wednesday.

The Match Day 5 defeat at home leaves the People's Elephant without a point from their opening five matches, further deepening their struggles at the foot of the standings.

Enyimba appeared to have taken control of the contest when Stanley Dimgba put the hosts ahead shortly before half-time.

Sporting Lagos, however, returned from the interval with greater urgency and drew level in the 51st minute through Abdulraqeeb Abdullahi.

The home side restored their advantage three minutes later when Tobi Ige Iyanda converted from the penalty spot to make it 2-1.

Rather than retreat, Sporting Lagos continued to push forward and were rewarded for their persistence.

Haruna Hadi struck in the 65th minute to bring the visitors level and complete his brace, before Daniel Aboh finished the turnaround four minutes later to give Sporting Lagos a 3-2 lead.

Enyimba were unable to find another response as Sporting Lagos held on for a significant away victory.

The result extends Enyimba's early-season difficulties and leaves the Aba-based side facing an unwanted statistical milestone, having failed to win any of their opening four league matches for the first time since the 1999 campaign, when they recorded two draws and two defeats.

For Sporting Lagos, the comeback provided a timely response to their previous 2-0 defeat against Abia Warriors and marked their second victory of the campaign.

The Lagos club will now look to build on the result, while Enyimba face the task of finding a way out of their difficult opening to the season.
