Rivers United delivered one of the most emphatic performances of the 2026/2027 Euromatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season so far, dismantling Kun Khalifat 5-0 at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt, on Wednesday.
The commanding victory lifted the Pride of Rivers five places to second in the standings with 11 points from four matches, moving them ahead of defending champions Rangers International.
Rivers United took control of the contest through Salman Abubakar, who struck twice, while Chijioke Mbaoma, Wasiu Falolu and Ekene Awazie also found the net to complete the rout.
Mbaoma added the third goal in the 49th minute before Falolu extended the advantage in the 62nd minute, with Awazie completing the scoring six minutes from full time.
Rivers United and Rangers both have a match in hand after their respective Match Day 5 fixtures were affected by their schedules.
While Rivers United enjoyed a five-goal celebration, Enyimba suffered another setback at home, falling 3-2 to Sporting Lagos in Aba.
The defeat was Enyimba’s second consecutive home loss and further increased the pressure on the nine-time champions following their difficult start to the campaign.
Rangers International responded to the challenge at the top with a narrow 1-0 victory over Ranchers, while Barau FC maintained their strong start with a 2-0 win over Abia Warriors in Kano.
Bendel Insurance also claimed maximum points, defeating Ikorodu City 2-1, while Shooting Stars secured a comfortable 2-0 home victory against Katsina United.
Kwara United edged Nasarawa United 2-1 in another closely contested encounter, while Inter Lagos and Kano Pillars shared the points following a 1-1 draw.
Niger Tornadoes and Warri Wolves played out a goalless draw, while Doma United and Plateau United produced an entertaining 2-2 stalemate.
With the midweek results reshaping the standings, Rivers United have emerged as one of the early pace-setters, while the struggles of established sides such as Enyimba add further intrigue to the opening stages of the campaign.
