2026/2027 Euromatch NPFL Match Day 5: Boboye Highlights Finishing Concerns Despite Insurance Win

Bendel Insurance head coach Kennedy Boboye has identified finishing as a major concern for his team despite their 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City in the 2026/27 Euromatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) on Wednesday.

The Benin-based side secured maximum points from the Match Day 5 encounter but were unable to convert several opportunities created during the game.

Boboye said the technical crew had continued to work on finishing in training, but acknowledged that the problem remained evident during competitive matches.

“Yeah, we still keep working because it’s (converting scoring chances) something we do every day,” Boboye said.

The coach explained that his players regularly practise taking chances during training, but their inability to reproduce that efficiency in matches had continued to affect the team.

“Taking our goal-scoring opportunities in games, we do them in training sessions,” he added.

“But when it comes to games like this, if we don’t take them, it becomes a problem for us.”

Beyond his team's struggles, Boboye linked the finishing challenge to what he described as a wider shortage of established strikers in the NPFL.

“Actually, it’s a problem everywhere in the country because, I’m sorry to say this, we don’t actually have quality strikers in the league,” he said.

The former coach noted that Bendel Insurance had resorted to adapting players who ordinarily operate from wide positions to play as attackers.

“We (coaches) are just managing. Most of the strikers you see playing for Bendel Insurance are not point men,” Boboye said.

“They are players who play from the sides, but we decided to convert them (to attackers) just to make up for the team.”

Despite the concerns over finishing, the victory over Ikorodu City provides Insurance with another three points as the Benin club continues its campaign.

Boboye will now be expected to work on improving his side's efficiency in front of goal as the season progresses, particularly with the team seeking to turn more of its scoring opportunities into goals.
