2026/2027 EuroMatch NPFL Match Day 2: Plateau United, Kwara United renew North-Central rivalry

Posted : 06 September 2026

Plateau United and Kwara United will renew their North-Central rivalry on Sunday when they meet in one of the standout fixtures of Match Day 2 of the 2026/2027 EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) in Jos.

The encounter presents Plateau United with an opportunity to respond in front of their home supporters after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Rivers United in their opening fixture.

Coach Gbenga Ogunbote will be looking for a more disciplined display from his players after the Jos club paid the price for avoidable mistakes in Port Harcourt.

The experienced tactician is expected to make adjustments as Plateau United seek their first points of the campaign and attempt to establish a strong home record early in the season.

Kwara United, meanwhile, head into the derby with greater confidence after fighting back from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw against Kano Pillars in Ilorin.

The comeback demonstrated the Harmony Boys’ resilience and ability to remain competitive even when faced with adversity.

Players such as Alex Jerry will again be expected to provide the attacking spark for Kwara United, who will be hoping to turn their promising opening performance into a first victory of the season.

The contrasting results from Match Day 1 add another layer to Sunday's contest. While Plateau United are under pressure to make their home advantage count, Kwara United have the psychological boost of recovering from a difficult position in their opening game.

For Ogunbote and his players, the priority will be to tighten their defence, improve their decision-making in key areas and make better use of the opportunities created.

Kwara United, on the other hand, will seek to maintain the fighting spirit they displayed against Kano Pillars and exploit any defensive weaknesses in the hosts.

The derby is expected to be fiercely contested, with local pride and early-season points at stake.

A victory for Plateau United would provide a much-needed lift after their opening-day setback, while three points for Kwara United could give them an ideal start to their campaign on the road.
