2026/2027 EuroMatch NPFL Match Day 2: Kun Khalifat, Barau FC battle for early-season momentum

Kun Khalifat FC will be looking to turn home advantage into their first victory of the 2026/2027 EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season when they host Barau FC at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, on Sunday.

The Owerri-based side opened their campaign with a goalless draw against Abia Warriors in Aba, in a match that was interrupted by heavy rainfall and eventually completed on Monday after the pitch became unplayable in the 73rd minute.

Technical adviser Obinna Uzoho, however, insists the result is already behind his team as they prepare for another demanding assignment.

Uzoho said the club's immediate objective is to take each match as it comes while improving on their position on the final league table compared with last season.

“We take the games one after the other. We’ve put the match against Abia Warriors behind us,” Uzoho told Complete Sports, stressing that the team is now focused on Barau FC.

Kun Khalifat will take confidence from the defensive resilience they displayed in Aba, with goalkeeper Akuchie Obinna producing an assured performance to keep a clean sheet.

The goalkeeper is likely to face a sterner examination against Barau, who began their campaign in impressive fashion with a 3-1 victory over Nasarawa United in Kano.

One of the players expected to attract attention is Barau forward Joseph Atule, who opened his team's scoring account on Match Day 1 and has already set himself the personal target of finding the net regularly throughout the season.

Atule's early-season form could provide a major threat to a Kun Khalifat defence that will be determined to record another clean sheet.

The clash consequently presents an interesting contrast: Kun Khalifat are seeking to convert a hard-earned away point into three points at home, while Barau will be keen to prove that their opening-day victory was not a one-off.

For the hosts, Uzoho's ambition of finishing higher on the table will require them to make matches such as Sunday's count, particularly at home.

Barau, meanwhile, will hope their attacking confidence carries into Owerri as they attempt to build on their impressive start and remain among the early pace-setters.

With both teams entering the fixture unbeaten, but with contrasting opening-day results, the Dan Anyiam Stadium is set for an intriguing contest between a Kun Khalifat side seeking its first win and a Barau team eager to maintain its winning momentum.
