Rivers United and Rangers International settled for a 1-1 draw in their 2026/2027 EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 11 top-of-the-table clash in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
The result saw both teams move to 18 points, maintaining their positions among the early contenders for the league title after an encounter marked by goals, missed opportunities and a late dismissal.
Rivers United took the lead in the 18th minute through M. Chijioke, putting the hosts in a strong position against a Rangers side returning to domestic action following their disappointing exit from the CAF Champions League.
However, the Flying Antelopes responded after the break, with Godwin Obaje restoring parity in the 54th minute to give the visitors renewed hope of securing maximum points.
Rangers' challenge became more difficult in the 71st minute when Obaje received a red card, forcing the visitors to negotiate the closing stages with 10 men.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Rangers remained organised and held on to secure a valuable away point against one of the league's leading sides.
Rangers head coach Ekeh Ekenedilichukwu praised his players for their resilience, describing them as "wounded lions" following their continental disappointment.
The Enugu-based side had crashed out of the CAF Champions League after losing 3-0 to MC Alger in the second leg in Algeria, surrendering a 2-0 first-leg advantage to exit 3-2 on aggregate.
Ekenedilichukwu said his players refused to allow the setback or the red card to disrupt their approach to the encounter.
"We play like wounded lions, and we want to heal ourselves. All these issues were not planned, even though we had a red card. But the technical team stood firm and strong to ensure the red card did not affect our game plan," he said.
Although Rangers had travelled to Port Harcourt targeting all three points, the coach considered the draw a worthwhile outcome.
"We planned to get three points, but we picked one. I wouldn't say it is a bad result for us. Getting a point away from home against a team with home advantage is also a plus," he added.
Meanwhile, Rivers United head coach Finidi George expressed concern over his side's inability to convert their chances, despite creating several opportunities during the contest.
The former Super Eagles winger acknowledged that injuries had affected his selection options but insisted that the team needed to improve its finishing.
"If we didn't create chances, I would be worried. But we created chances; we didn't take them," Finidi said.
He added that the technical crew would intensify finishing drills in training to improve the team's goalscoring efficiency.
"We will go back and work on that because it is a major issue. We will work on our scoring abilities, with a lot of finishing drills to see how the players can fine-tune that aspect of their game," he said.
Rivers United will next travel to face Sporting Lagos on Saturday, while Rangers return to Enugu to host Bendel Insurance on Wednesday.
For Rangers, the draw offers an opportunity to regain domestic momentum after their continental disappointment, while Rivers United will seek to sharpen their finishing as the title race gathers pace.
