El-Kanemi Warriors kept their CAF Confederation Cup campaign alive with a late equaliser to earn a 2–2 draw against Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca in the first leg of their 2026/2027 second-round encounter in Ikenne on Sunday.
Nnamdi Mejuobi struck in the 83rd minute to rescue the Nigerian side after Raja had overturned an early deficit, leaving both teams with everything to play for ahead of the return leg in Morocco.
The result offered El-Kanemi some relief after their advantage slipped away in a contest that tested their ability to withstand the visitors’ attacking pressure.
The Nigerian representatives made a positive start, taking the lead in the first half and raising hopes of securing an important home victory.
Raja Casablanca, however, responded through Shararah to restore parity before the break, ensuring the visitors remained firmly in contention.
The Moroccan side returned with greater purpose after the interval and completed their comeback when Nigerian forward Mathias Oyewusi scored to put Raja ahead.
Oyewusi’s goal threatened to leave El-Kanemi facing a difficult task in the return fixture, with Raja poised to take a valuable victory away from Nigeria.
The Warriors nevertheless showed resilience in the closing stages, pushing forward in search of a response. Their persistence paid off seven minutes before the end of regulation time when Mejuobi found the net to level the contest at 2–2.
The late goal proved significant for El-Kanemi, preventing defeat on home soil and preserving their hopes of progressing to the next round.
However, the draw leaves the Nigerian side with work to do in Morocco, where they will need an effective attacking display and defensive discipline to overcome their opponents.
For Raja Casablanca, the two away goals provide encouragement heading into the second leg, although the visitors will be disappointed at having surrendered their lead late in the encounter.
With the tie still unresolved, El-Kanemi Warriors must now prepare for a demanding return fixture, where their continental ambitions will be tested against one of Morocco’s established clubs.
