2025 WAFCON: Super Falcons Thrash Zambia 5–0 to Seal Semi-Final Spot

Posted : 19 July 2025

Nigeria produced a masterclass performance to thrash Zambia 5–0 in a stunning Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarter-final tie on Friday in Casablanca.

The nine-time champions delivered an unforgettable display to book a spot in the semi-finals, sending home a Zambian side that had shown impressive strength and ambition in the group stage.

Just two minutes into the match, Osinachi Ohale rose highest to meet Esther Okoronkwo’s well-placed free-kick, heading the ball past the goalkeeper to give Nigeria an early lead.

The Super Falcons celebrated with flair and kept the pressure on, dominating the wings and midfield. Although Zambia had a couple of chances in the 21st and 30th minutes, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and her defenders held firm.

Midfielder Jennifer Echegini combined excellently with Halimatu Ayinde and Okoronkwo in the middle, while captain Rasheedat Ajibade led the team with poise. Chinwendu Ihezuo and debutant Folasade Ijamilusi consistently troubled Zambia’s defense.

Nigeria doubled their lead in the 33rd minute with a brilliant team goal. Echegini won the ball in midfield and passed to Ashleigh Plumptre, who found Ajibade. The skipper lofted the ball into the box, where Okoronkwo controlled it with her chest and finished superbly into the far corner.

The third goal came before halftime when Nnadozie launched a long ball that was misjudged by a Zambian defender. Ihezuo pounced on the loose ball and coolly slotted it home.

In the second half, Nigeria remained in control, neutralizing Zambia’s attacking threats, particularly Barbra Banda and Rachael Kundananji.

Defender Tosin Demehin made it 4–0 with a header from a set-piece on the right, and Ijamilusi capped the rout by timing her run perfectly to convert a pass from Ajibade, sealing Nigeria’s fifth goal.

With the emphatic win, Nigeria advances to face the winner of Saturday’s quarter-final clash between defending champions
