2025 President Federation Cup: Rangers Int'l FC seeks quarter final against Insurance in Lagos

Posted : 15 April 2025

This Wednesday, April 16, football fans in Lagos will be treated to a potentially thrilling President Federation Cup Round of 16 encounter between two of Nigeria's most storied clubs: Bendel Insurance FC of Benin City and Rangers International FC of Enugu.

The iconic Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Victoria Island, Lagos, will be the battleground for this clash, with kick-off scheduled for 4:00 pm WAT.

A coveted spot in the quarter-finals is the prize for the victor.

Both teams have navigated their way to this stage with contrasting victories.

Bendel Insurance enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win over Adamawa United in their previous round, showcasing their attacking prowess. Rangers, on the other hand, had a more challenging route, edging out Heartland FC 5-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

This demonstrates their resilience and ability to perform under pressure.

The clash between Bendel Insurance and Rangers is steeped in history, particularly in the President Federation Cup.

Their past encounters in the finals of this prestigious competition have become legendary:

1978 Final (Lagos): Bendel Insurance stunned the nation by emphatically defeating Rangers 3-0.

1981 Final (Lagos): Rangers avenged their previous loss with a 2-0 victory over the Benin side.

2023 Final (Asaba): In a more recent encounter, Bendel Insurance once again emerged victorious, securing a narrow 1-0 win over the Flying Antelopes.

These past results highlight the competitive nature of this rivalry and suggest that Wednesday's match could be another closely fought affair.

Technical adviser of Rangers and assistant coach of the Super Eagles, Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, remains optimistic despite their recent league loss and injury concerns.

His statement, "I believe we have what it takes to go past our opponents, who I must confess are in their best form lately. Despite our injury worries, we have the talent to get the job done in Lagos. We have prepared very well for this match, and by God's grace, we shall overcome," reflects his confidence in his team's ability to rise to the occasion in this crucial cup tie.

Football fans in Lagos are in for an exciting Wednesday afternoon as these two giants of Nigerian football lock horns once again for a place in the President Federation Cup quarter-finals.
