All eyes will be on midfield powerhouse Josephine Mathias as Rivers Angels and Nasarawa Amazons clash in the final of the women’s competition of the 2025 President Federation Cup at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Saturday.
Six years ago, Mathias joined Rivers Angels after a stint in Turkey with Trabzon İdmanocağı and featured in the 2019 final where her team lost to Nasarawa Amazons. Now captain of the Lafia-based side, she’ll aim to lead them to victory against the defending champions.
Rivers Angels, reigning champions with nine titles, overcame Ibom Angels 1-0 in the semi-finals, following earlier wins over Moje Queens (7-0), First Mahi Babes (5-0), and Remo Stars Ladies (3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw).
The Amazons reached the final after defeating Edo Queens 2-0, Sunshine Queens 4-0, Bayelsa Queens 2-1, and Kwara Ladies 6-0.
However, the team will be without key players Rachael Unachukwu and Sikiratu Isah, both currently with the Super Falcons at the 2025 WAFCON in Morocco. Nevertheless, they boast a strong lineup, including defenders Jumoke Alani and Oluchi Ohaegbulem, midfielders Aminat Bello, Shola Shobowale, Yina Adoo, and striker Janet Akekoromowei — all of whom have national team experience.
Rivers Angels will rely on goalkeeper Anderline Mgbechi, midfield maestro Taiwo Afolabi, and junior internationals Peace Effiong, Motunrayo Ezekiel, and Chidera Okenwa.
In the men’s final, set for a 4 p.m. kickoff, Kwara United's talisman Wasiu Alalade is expected to be the standout performer. Known for his clinical finishing and work ethic, he will lead the Afonja Warriors against Abakaliki FC.
Kwara United also feature seasoned names like goalkeeper Suraju Aiyeleso, Isa Gatta, Adamu Abubakar, and Wasiu Jimoh.
Abakaliki FC, on the other hand, will depend on goalkeeper Pascal Elochukwu and outfield talents Cyril Timothy, Chisom Ogbu, Ejike Nwafor, Collins Kalu, and Chukwudi Okoro.
