2025 NWFL Premiership Super Six: Teams set for titanic battle in Ikenne

Posted : 09 May 2025

With just days to go until the kick-off of the 2024/25 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six, excitement is building for what promises to be a thrilling showdown among the country’s top women’s teams.

Since the league adopted the playoff format in 2021, four different champions have been crowned—reflecting the competitive depth in the country’s domestic women’s top flight.

Three of those champions—Bayelsa Queens, Rivers Angels, and Edo Queens—return this year, alongside former winners Nasarawa Amazons and two title hopefuls seeking their first triumph: Remo Stars Ladies and Naija Ratels.

Participating Teams for the 2025 Edition:
Edo Queens (1st in Group A – 35 points)

Remo Stars Ladies (2nd in Group A – 30 points)

Nasarawa Amazons (3rd in Group A – 28 points)

Bayelsa Queens (1st in Group B – 34 points)

Rivers Angels (2nd in Group B – 32 points)

Naija Ratels (3rd in Group B – 23 points)

In-Depth Look at the Title Contenders
Edo Queens (1st in Group A – 35 points)
Edo Queens are the team to beat. The defending champions made history in 2024 by clinching their first-ever NWFL Premiership title and have proven they’re no one-season wonder. Under the guidance of experienced head coach Moses Aduku—who previously won the title with Bayelsa Queens in 2021—the Benin-based side has built a team defined by tactical discipline, squad depth, and strong investment from the Edo State government.

Their regular-season form was imperious: 11 wins, 2 draws, and only 1 loss—a surprising defeat to Nasarawa Amazons. Edo Queens have also impressed on the continental stage, winning the WAFU-B Women’s Club Championship and reaching the CAF Women’s Champions League semifinals. These achievements have given them the confidence and exposure needed for the high-pressure Super Six format.

With players like Mary Mamudu, Emem Essien, Goodness Osigwe, Morufat Ademola, Chioma Moses, and defensive engine Miracle Usani, they are not just title contenders—they are title defenders.

Remo Stars Ladies (2nd in Group A – 30 points)
The upstarts with home advantage and big dreams

Remo Stars Ladies are the fairytale story of this season’s Super Six. Formed just a few years ago and now in only their second top-flight campaign, the Ikenne-based team defied expectations to finish second in Group A, qualifying for their first-ever playoffs.

Coached by former Super Falcons assistant coach Wemimo Mathew, the Sky Blue Ladies represent a growing shift in Nigerian women’s football—where private investment and professional structures are beginning to rival traditional state-backed clubs.

They head into the Super Six with strong momentum. Highlights of their season include a seven-match unbeaten streak, lifting the Sheroes Cup in pre-season, and a strong local showing by winning the Ogun State President FA Cup.

Remo Stars Ladies will also benefit from being Super Six hosts, playing all matches at their home ground in Ikenne. Inspired by their men’s team—who recently won their first-ever NPFL title—the Ikenne-based club could become the first privately owned women’s side to win the league since Ufuoma Babes in 1996.

Led by talented forwards Bolaji Olamide and Kafayat Bashiru, solid midfielder Innocent Patricia, and disciplined captain and defender Akudo Ogbonna, Remo Stars are ready to shock the elite and etch their name in history.

Nasarawa Amazons (3rd in Group A – 28 points)
Northern Nigeria’s powerhouse seeks a return to the summit

One of the most respected teams in Nigerian women’s football, Nasarawa Amazons are two-time champions (2013 and 2017) and have consistently been a threat in the playoff era.

Managed by women’s national U-20 team coach Christopher Danjuma, the Lafia-based side has a reputation for producing top Nigerian talent, including internationals like Christy Ucheibe.

Their 2024/25 campaign saw them win 9 of 14 matches, showing flashes of brilliance despite an inconsistent run marked by 3 losses and 2 draws. Still, they qualified with a match to spare, underlining their pedigree.

The Solid Babes are also still in the hunt for the 2025 President Federation Cup, making them potential double-title winners this season.

As the only club from Northern Nigeria to win the league, their presence in the Super Six continues to inspire and grow the women’s game beyond southern strongholds.

Players to watch include Olushola Shobowale, clinical finisher Janet Akekoromowei, solid defender Sikiratu Isah, creative midfielder Yina Adoo, and the youthful duo of Aminat Bello and Joy Igbokwe.

Bayelsa Queens (1st in Group B – 34 points)
The Invincibles ready to reclaim their crown

Bayelsa Queens, five-time league champions, are one of Nigeria’s most decorated women’s clubs. The Yenagoa-based side topped Group B without losing a single match (10 wins, 4 draws), making them the only unbeaten team in the 2024 regular season.

Led by Whyte Ogonda—who won the President Federation Cup with Rivers Angels last season—the Prosperity Girls are built around experience and defensive solidity.

With a strong blend of youth and veterans, they’re among the favorites to lift the title once again.

Bayelsa Queens’ golden run in 2022—when they won the league, the WAFU-B Championship, and took CAF Champions League bronze—remains unmatched in Nigeria. That kind of legacy makes them dangerous when it matters most.

Although they were eliminated from this year’s cup competition by Nasarawa Amazons, they will enter the Super Six laser-focused on reclaiming the league trophy.

Key players include Mercy Omokwo, Jennifer Oliver, Mary Aderemi, Delight Isaac, Precious Oscar, Vera Samuel, and Olabiyi Alaba—all capable of turning the tide in a single moment.

Rivers Angels (2nd in Group B – 32 points)
Chasing an eighth title to cement their legacy

Rivers Angels are royalty in Nigerian women’s football. With seven league titles, the Port Harcourt giants are chasing one more to equal the all-time record.

After narrowly missing out on the crown to Edo Queens last year, they are back with renewed purpose and a squad hungry for redemption.

Coached by Tosan Blankson, a former league winner himself, the Port Harcourt-based team finished the regular season with 10 wins, 2 draws, and 2 losses—a solid run that confirmed their place in yet another Super Six (their sixth consecutive appearance).

Rivers Angels have consistently represented Nigeria on the continental stage, being the first club to play in the CAF Women’s Champions League in 2021. That experience, combined with their big-game mentality, makes them a formidable side.

With stars like Mary Moses, Sandra John, Abibat Agbaji, Ifeoma Polinus, Titilayo Aweda, and dynamic midfielder Taiwo Afolabi, they remain serious contenders to reclaim their lost crown.

Naija Ratels (3rd in Group B – 23 points)
The dark horses ready to prove a point

Naija Ratels, based in Abuja, return to the Super Six after a two-year absence. Under head coach Samson Keshi, the team clinched their playoff spot on the final matchday, edging out FC Robo Queens thanks to a gutsy draw against unbeaten Bayelsa Queens.

In only their fourth season in the NWFL Premiership, Ratels are still building, but they’ve shown real growth.

Their 2024 campaign ended with 6 wins, 5 draws (the most in the league), and just 3 losses—a testament to their defensive resolve and fighting spirit.

Their previous Super Six appearance in 2022 was a learning curve, ending in five straight losses. But this time, the team enters with greater experience and mental strength.

They’re also one of only two Northern teams in the playoffs, continuing to challenge the Southern dominance of the league.

Watch for standout midfielder Bankole Sofiat, Oluwatumininu Adeshina, Tsebee Rita, Anani Oluwaseun, Grace Saliu, and Oluwabunmi Oladeji, who have been crucial in tight matches.

If Naija Ratels can pull off a few surprises, they could shift the balance in this year’s title race.
